Sometimes, even with the most modern hardware and operating systems, transfer
speed will be very slow during times of high traffic volume.  Another factor
than can adversely affect the transfer speed are your modem settings.  Check
out the figure you have indicated for your modem speed.  If you have a 33.6
modem you should indicate at least 57600 for your modem speed, at least 38400
for a 19.2 modem.  (The modem speed is the speed at which the modem
communicates with your PC, not the speed of the connection with the remote
computer.)  Sometimes you can develop a modem initialization string that will
greatly enhance the speed.  Try some experiments along that line.
