XOSL - "Extended Operating System Loader" by Geurt Vos.

    "XOSL is distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public
    License (GPL). The source code of the entire XOSL project is
    freely available at the official XOSL web site" :
    <http://www.xosl.org>

I had a bit of a problem accessing the above page, java
scripts etc. But I found my way to the download directory, here:
<http://members.xoom.com/xosl/arch/xosl110/bin/>
where I found <xoslfat.zip> - for FAT (DOS/Win) systems.

And in <http://members.xoom.com/xosl/arch/xosl100/manual/> I found
the required reading material. Available in both word and pdf (sigh)
but also html (relief!) format (if memory serves me right, I only
got the html)

Installing it was very easy (just install - reboot and configure it
when it appears) - but I suggest reading the manual first anyway.
Better to know beforehand what to do if anything goes wrong. Also
suggest installing from a floppy, since that makes un- or
reinstalling it (if needed) just as easy.

One minus with XOSL is the

    "Minimal system requirements:
    80386 or better with 4Mb of RAM
    VESA VBE 1.2 compliant video adapter
    512k of free disk space"

And you can not use it with anything less than 800x600 resolution
(currently). Or, it runs on 640x480, but then some of the buttons
and controls are out of sight (vital ones, like hide partitions - I
found out the hard way ;).

But else, very nice, rather intuitive and with pretty good manual.
And it has all or most of the major features you'd want from a
bootloader, like partition hiding on boot to mention just one.
(see web for full description).

In case you get stuck with it, or have suggestions for improvements,
there is a mailing list over at onelist.com:
<http://www.onelist.com/subscribe/xosl>
I posted there yesterday, suggesting an optional textmode interface
(pls echo <g>). You can read my post there if you like (not very
active list it seems, few members).

All the best,
Bjorn
