Well, no, not really.
But the Sound card's only function when playing audio CDs from a
standard CDROM drive is to provide sound mixing and amplifying. The
sound itself is provided by the CDROM drive (at least with the drives i
know...).
So you don't really need a sound card. Some drives have control buttons
(play and such) on their front, and a headphone jack. That would be a
first step.
Another idea is to look for the sound output on the back of your drive
(something with 3 or 4 pins) and wire it to a speaker. Use your drive's
controls (if any) or try your CD playing software.
When connecting to the PC speaker, it would be a good idea to remove the
PC speaker's connections to the rest of the PC, or at least put a few
resistors in...
If you want a software-only solution, it looks like conversion to WAV
file (or to MP3 if you have at fast 386 or up) is necessary (DOS MP3
player DOSAMP somewhere at www.nullsoft.com).
