You always have to weigh the value of what you might lose against the effort
of backing it up. If the system's expendable, then no big deal (though the
pride sure takes a beating!) I think the concern about UMSDOS (besides
performance) is the susceptibility to lost clusters and the like in the
event of a problem while using DOS. These could cause problems with files
that Linux uses that reside on the FAT partition.

apt-get will do all that automatically as well!
