Whether and what types of memory you can mix and match depends on the
specific model of motherboard you have. Generally, it is better to have all
memory in the system have all the same specifications. There were some
boards that would accept EDO modules and standard SIMM modules, treating the
EDO ones as regular memory. Other systems would not accept EDO memory, or
would accept only one or the other, but not a mixing. Other systems might
accept mixing and matching of different specifications, but will be
particular about which "bank" holds which type, or even about how you must
space them in the memory slots within each bank.
The general rule of thumb to be safe is, don't mix and match, although if
you have the time and the patience to experiment, you might get away with it
if the motherboard allows it.
