Because that is what the company who created it calls it, a "cat". It's
about the size of an index card, and 5-8mm thick, the touching surface
about the size of a credit card, has 4 buttons, though the two on either
side of the pad are linked as one, the 3rd mouse button by default, then
right and left under
you can reprogram them to a variety of functions.
All four sides/edges of the touch surface have specialty functions, surf,
zoom, and scroll, and one corner represents right clicking
Using it takes about 3wks of difficulty to become familiar, and then it's a
dream, much more stable and controllable than a mouse, and easier on the wrist
