Hi!
After having looked at my modem's User's Manual (it's an E-Tech Bullet
E288) once again, I would like to add to my former advice on storing a
profile, that you can make this profile the default power-on profile
with the command AT&Y, which means you don't have to use any
"init-string" for your special settings at all next time.
On the other hand, this init-string is usually remembered by your
communications software, as Anthony J. Albert points out in his reply,
so I don't see much use storing these settings in the modem's memory.
Perhaps it will make dialling a little bit faster, though, when you
don't have to re-enter them to the modem every time?
Anyway, here is an excerpt from the User's Manual:
"A configuration profile refers to a complete set of operating
parameters for the E288MX modem. The operating parameters in use at any
one time are referred to as the active profile of the modem. The active
profile is stored in RAM on the modem and may be viewed at any time by
entering the AT command "AT&V1".
The modem is shipped with two factory-defined profiles, which are
stored in a nonvolatile memory on the modem. These profiles consist of
the operating parameters most commonly used for different types of data
communication applications. The factory default profile, which is
profile 0, is designed for typical PC applications. This profile can be
reloaded at any time by entering the AT command "AT&F0."
The modem also provides a nonvolatile memory (EEPROM) in which one or
two user-defined configuration profiles may be stored. To create a user-
defined profile, first set up the modem in the configuration that you
wish to save (you can do this by using AT commands and by modifying the
S register settings). Then store the current active profile to memory
by entering the command "AT&Wn," where n (n = 0 or 1) is the number of
the memory in which the new user-defined profile is to be stored. To
load a user-defined profile stored in memory so that it becomes the
active profile, enter the command "ATZn," where n (n = 0 or 1) is the
number of the user-defined profile you wish to load.
When the modem is shipped from the factory, the power-on default
configuration profile is factory-defined profile 0. You may change the
power-on default configuration profile if you wish. To do so, first set
up the modem with the desired power-on default profile. Next, use the
"AT&Wn" command to save the profile as one of the two user-defined
profiles. Finally, designate the user-defined profile you just created
as the power-on default profile by entering the command "AT&Yn," where n
(n = 0 or 1) is the number in memory in which you saved the desired
power-on default profile."
Note: I cannot guarantee that these instructions are valid for all
modems of all makes (they probably are not).
On this particular modem, you may also store up to four telephone
numbers using the command AT&Zn=[number] where n is the number of the
memory location, 0 to 3. To retrieve the stored number for dialling,
you enter ATDSn, where n is location 0 to 3. This might speed up
dialling a few more milliseconds. I haven't tried any of these options
myself, though. Has anybody?
