hi everyone!
well, i have at long last found someone who i can bribe to help me fix the
hard drive. for those of you who have been half asleep lol! i have a
seagate roughly 2 g hd but am only getting access to about 500 meg of it.
seagate assures me that my particular drive should been seen in its entirety,
but last time they sent me the wrong values for heads, sectors, and
calenders. i have the right ones, so have to start all over.
the person is due on friday morning, but before then i need to make sure of
something.
the last few times i did this, i *really* had trouble with dos, so d o not
trust what i have. a friend emailed me a new copy of dos 622 which i will
use, but here is the concern. if i am correct, i must make the first disk i
copy the the first file she sent, which is the equal of the first dos
system disk bootable in order to use this new disk to install. if i make it
bootable with my current dos setup, and it is indeed corrupted, when i copy
the new data, will not i have a problem? also, i am using pkzip to backup my
present hard drive. however, when i unzip it later on to my newly formated
drive, how again do i avoid not unzipping the present DOs over my new one. I
have a fairly good idea that what i have right now is not perfect.
remember when i was looking for edline a week or so ago? well, i could never
run the edition i got, dos kept giving me the "incorrect dos version"
message, and when i tried to install the entire utility set fromt he micro
soft website, it could not install properly for the same reason. I *am*
running dos 622, however, i am not certain weather that flurtation with dos
7 is still in my boot sector causing a conflict, or if my formating and
fdisking repeatably caused a problem. so, i do not want to unzip my present
dos onto this drive once everything else is fixed.
lastly, i do have as a last result, a disk management program from seagate.
if i *absolutely* must use this to get the whole drive, at what point do i
use it? before installing dos or after?
thanks for all your help as always,
karen the almost hd happy
