Personally I find it very disturbing to have computers in cars in that
capacity. It has driven up the cost of repair to alarming degrees. I
drive an older car which is from before that era. If something isn't
working right it can be trouble shooted in the backyard and fixed with a
little fiddling or maybe a quick trip to the junkyard and I've never spent
much more than a hundred dollars to repair it. A lot of repairs I've been
able to handle myself. With computer modules, however, something as simple
as a blown solenoid is now integrated into the main control module and can
cost many hundreds to repair where before it would have been twenty dollars
and your time. I lament that the automobile has become so very expensive
and yet so very necessary, at least out here on the canadian praries where
there is a lot of space and little alternative transport. Meantime, with
all this gadgetry and cost, we still haven't gotten away from the damned
internal combustion engine. I certainly wish we'd put more money into that
instead of cruise control and ignition speed! Not to mention, if my PC
crashes it's a nuisance, but if my cruise control goes whacky it could kill me!
