What about automatic cars?  Is there any "manual override"
equivalent to the clutch pedal which can be used fast enough
to "disconnect" the engine when such malfunction happened?

At least from what I saw on Hollywood movies, seems even the
break and handbrake won't help if the cruise control goes
haywire on high-powered vehicles with matic transmission...
There's no clucth pedal! :-)
