I don't think that I would recommend turning off the the ignition while
driving down the freeway in a newer car that has a MECHANICAL interlock
that locks the steering column. I'd save it for the case where the
brakes fail AND the throttle sticks! :-)
By the way, if the engine keeps turning (driven by the gearbox), ordinary
carburetors (not electronic injection) will keep pumping gasoline through
the engine. If it doesn't "Diesel" by igniting on a piece of hot carbon,
you may get a real surprise if something sets off the fumes in the
exhaust system. I once saw a gasoline-powered truck blow its muffler to
bits when it braked hard, stalled momentarily as the driver shifted, and
then restarted with a BANG! Bright pink flash - I must have jumped about
three feet. :-)
