I know for a fact, having done it, that any 80486-based machine, if it has
a DX33 or faster CPU, including all DX2/40, DX2/50, DX4/75 or faster, will
easily support any 56K V.90 external modem if it is connected to a serial
port with at least a 16550 UART. Any 28.8 KBPS V.34 or faster internal
hardware modem already has the propper UART built in. In fact, I have run
my Diamond Supra Express 56K V.90 external modem happily on a 80386DX/25
machine on a serial port with a 16550 UART.

Any modern hardware-based internal modem and any good external modem
should work just fine. Even cheap ones from brands like ArchTech are very
good, and even formerly expensive modems like Motorola, Supra (now Diamond
MultiMedia), US-Robotics Sportster and Courrier models, are much cheaper,
and many of them sell for considerably under $100, even for external
models. Internal models, even V.90 56K models, sell for under $50. For
internal models, make sure they are true hardware modems, and don't
require Windows software in order to operate. The field is still wide
open, especially if you look in used computer shops, "shows" and swap
meets, second-hand and thrift shops, and post requests on
computer-oriented newsgroups and e-mail lists, and in the various
"for-sale" newsgroups.
