I am using an external AVTEK 56k "megamodem". I think it is actually made by
one of the more recognised brands, just re-labelled to compete at a
lower price. It runs like a train on my '486 133 MHz machine. The speed
of up/down traffic is more dependent on the copper telephone wires than
on my machine. I use Arachne almost exclusively, and only sometimes Win
3.1 for Opera or Netscape or CuteFTP when needed.
So, 56k is not a problem with a 486.
