That's one of the cool things about the older OSes/environments,
there's no real need to wipe out things when upgrading.
If I'm not mistaken the win3.11 install will know what to do
when it finds an existing win installation.
As always it's good to copy/backup some ini files and whatnot
just in case.
DOS shouldn't be a problem either but for safety reason I usually
make a copy of a directory if I have the space, just in case.
For instance make a DOS5 directory (or whatever the version is)
and copy what's in the old one to the new, then upgrade your DOS.
Regardless, always have a boot floppy in case things go awry.

Neither Windows nor DOS will touch any third-party programs but of
course will overwrite files with existing names (DOS utilities,
various win programs that are standard like notepad, write, etc.).
You could probably install win3.11 to a separate directory other
than c:\windows so it won't overwrite anything but not sure on that.
But as we know Windows seems to be set in its ways, even with win3
probably.
