*snort* It's very useful for batch programming, you know...  You can use it
to carry out random operations on a text file in batch mode, like DEBUG, so
for instance can create self-modifying batch files or batch files that can
do recursive directory stuff by using DIR etc.  It's also useful to know if
you're faced with a plain DOS 3.1 system with no floppy drive and no other
editor on the HDD (yes, I've seen that, had to work with the damn things
(diskless network clients with a default ROM drive image) too).

EDLIN is to DOS what vi, awk, sed etc. are to Unices, but with less style.
