Is there any good description somewhere on how a sound "mixer" works ?

It's the decisive interface between the hardware/soundcard and just
any sound soft whatsoever - but roaming through the labyrinth of Linux
How-Tos, books and files was liketryingto undelete the NUL device.
And sure there wasn't anything more in the DOS literature.
