I have a lot of experience in setting up and running many various DOS
email programs. I found Pegasus for DOS to be the most troublesome.
I gave up on trying to deal with the hassle of trying to set it up. I
never did get it to run right. The easiest to set up DOS email program
I have found so far is NetMail Pro, by David Colston, author of
Nettamer. NetMail Pro comes with its own self-contained PPP dialer
already compiled into the program. Also it will encode/decode
attachments automagically. You can download a fully functional trial
version from http://www.nettamer.net/xagent.html. NetMail Pro will
run on an 8088. It will run even on the original IBM PC that comes
with just 256KB of memory. You can run the program from a single
360K bootable floppy. I liked this program so much that I paid my
$40.00 to register it.
