Sometimes the installation of a new application replaces some
DLLs, with results that can affect other using the same
DLL. As for the hanging at shutdown, IIRC this is a problem
with Win98. Microsoft had a patch for it at some point, but
that didn't work. I don't know what the current situation
is with that one.

For finding solutions, a good start is running your error
message through the search engine at www.google.com. Add
any other search terms you might think appropriate to
narrow the hits. Tips on advanced search techniques are
well worth reading too. There's also a mailing list more or
less devoted to this sort of thing at:
