DONT think the charge rate is high enough to matter.
I've seen the same problem with old boards that have
sat around unused, and even though they dont boot, I
leave them running a few hours to charge up the cmos,
then they will get it togather, reset, and run.
I've also hooked up a 486 directly to batteries, like
he said, a few AA for the cmos, a 12v car battery for
the 12 volt motors in the drives, and a 6v golfcart
battery (with an inline silicon diode to drop the voltage)
directly to the 5v mthbd jack lines. runs fine.
Old mtbds usta have jumpers to disable and hook up an
external battery for the cmos. but I've also stripped
the nicads outta a dead cordless phone, and soldered them
in to replace the dead cmos... and- dribbled hot solder
on a motherboard, which is a real rush. ;-}
