mskermit from columbia university is still alive, but how can you kill a communications program that can do either dial up or ip and was written for more platforms than Bill Gates ever heard of? The deal with mskermit is you buy the book and get the software for the price of the book. I never used it on its more advanced ip features, but it can talk to ethernet cards and regular serial cards as well. Other packages are available but not nearly so versatile.
