Steven - the described procedure should well serve for a simple file
transfer setup; and I have a DOS- and a Linux-box linked that way:

Only that I didn't succeed (yet) to use it in a simple way. Mostly I
would need to transfer text files from the Linux box to the DOS
machine to print (edited/shortened) from there. (Or even more trivial,
to dump them from the Linux box.) But I did run in a quagmire of
permission and (in-)accessibility hitches, so the only more practical
way hitherto was to copy the stuff, on the Linux box, to a DOS
partition there, and then every once in a while use a file transfer
thing like DRDOS "filelink" for a bunch of that stuff.

Cumbersome (and stupid maybe, seen from the high branches of Linux
expertise) but still easier doable than to wrestle with not given, or
not to find, information on "system administration" stuff.
