Ah, now I see. The modem driver uses 386 tricks to provide a virtual
serial port, but conflicts with EMM386's own trickery.   <g>

Oh, well, maybe you can still use HiMem and DOS=High to save some
conventional memory? The phrase "memory managers such as HIMEM/EMM386"
might mean "HiMem and/or EMM386", however it might instead mean
"HiMem with EMM386" - hopefully it's the latter. If you can use
HiMem, the DPMS stuff still applies, but it is only relevant for
DPMS-aware drivers and TSR's.
