Hi Charles,

The fact that I had to do more than just download pkzip 2.5 DOS
helped fix the time period. Anchored it in time.

Pkzip 2.5 for Windows was released in 1996. There was discussion
at that time of updating the DOS version to handle Win 9x long
file names. I got my copy of version 2.5 for DOS in early 1999.
Phil died in April of 2000. My understanding was that he had
bought out his mother's interest some time before (1997?).

I have no information regarding who was running the company by
that point. Had I been Phil, I would have wanted to focus on the
technologies and let someone else handle the running of PkWare,
but that only establishes my own viewpoint.

I had a friend who met Phil once, at Fall Comdex in the mid-90s,
and described him as a gentle, friendly, talkative fellow with
wild eyes, bushy hair, and a beard. He was handing out free
copies of his pkzip 2.04g to all who came by. We never had any
correspondence, but when I heard he had died I actually wept.

I find no problem with characterizing him as being against a
GUI interface, but then I didn't know him personally.

I'm glad he lived. I'm sorry he died. His life enriched the
whole of mankind.

~~ Garry
