When an old PC is used as an X terminal, input from keyboard and mouse is sent to the server where the application is run and output is sent to the screen of the old PC. One up-to-date computer (with 256mb RAM) can be a server for a dozen old PCs. This will enable each of the old PCs to perform like the up-to-date PC. In fact, in some situations, a network of 12 old PCs and 1 up-to-date PC will perform better than 13 up-to-date computers.
