Paul,
I also have an NEC IDE/ATAPI cd changer. I got a small c program off the
web which was written by Gerhard Zuber. It allows you to change the current
disk of the NEC device. If you are interested, I can send you a copy of the
code.
The burning question for the genius computer gurus is: can this utility be
called by the automounter so that the disk is first changed to the desired
disk and then mounted? This would allow us NEC changer types to have the
same functionality of the SCSI crowd!

Is your friend's changer a true SCSI unit, or is he using the kernel SCSI
emulation of an ATAPI device? I couldn't get the changer (mine's a NEC
ATAPI
4-slotter) to access more than the first slot, even with LUN probing.
