Yes, that is the party line. It's not true, or rather doesn't have to be true, but anything can be done badly. The US Farm industry has swallowed the line that huge amounts of pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and irrigation must be used to make plastic crops.
Many farmers have bucked the system, and gone back to farming methods from 100 years ago and have found that their yields have improved, the quality of the product has improved, and their expenses have dropped.
