There are a few tricks to keeping water fresh. 1) Use distilled water. If you start with a sanitized barrel, and fill it with distilled water, there is nothing to 'go bad'.
2) Rotate it every 6-8 months. 3) Bubble air through it before use. Water really doesn't go bad unless something wasn't clean to begin with, but, it can go flat. We are used to drinking water with some air dissolved into it, but, with water just sitting around, the air will eventually escape from the water. 4) Remember that a doctor can cure a water born disease, but, he can not cure a case of death by dehydration.
