More seriously, XML is kind of handy because of all the work that has been put into working out the APIs to work with it. Every language handles XML, and XML of some type is now the lingua-franqua for data transfer. Even though there is no real practical point to a lot of the XML we throw around, the fact is that using XML cuts down the length of the development cycle and improves interoperability since it has been well thought out.
