On Windows theres Microsoft Visual Studio if you can afford it.
Otherwise I think the free Visual Studio Express Web Designer may be useful
here :-

Worth checking out I have not done so myself as I have Visual Studio, but the
Web Designer is just a cut down version for mainly for students.
On FireFox theres Firebug :-

Probably its not new, but can be helpfull case you dont know:
if you put all your javascript in external files the browser
tells you the (more or less 1 line error) nearly exact line of the errors.
