Unlike Tom, I drove. I made my side trip to see friends in NJ as I usually do and it was around 12:30 when I left Cherry Hill. It took 90 minutes to get to Valley Forge and the turnpike. Going was very slow on the PA Turnpike. I'd say my average speed as 30 to 35 mph and by 7:00 I had only made it to Breezewood. At that point I was exhausted and I called it a night and found a room. I slept in this morning and left Breezewood around 10:30 AM and made it to Columbus just at 3:00 PM. Conditions had improved enough that probably could have made it home last night but darkness, fatigue, and ice on the roads made me think better of it.
Tom's right, a Springfest has so much appeal right now... Thanks to the Festmeisters for a great fest and all the presenters who did such a great job. Also, thanks to all of you who shared a moment (or more) of conversation, food, drink, etc. with me at one time or another during the weekend. After missing the fest two years ago due to illness, I always count on the fest re-energizing my radio batteries for another year. -- -Rob de Santos, K8RKD Horizons (Trends in Technology) Columnist CQ Magazine -----Original Message----- From: Swlfest [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Tom Swisher Sent: Monday, March 2, 2015 3:16 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [Swlfest] Arrived home already! I flew into BWI and rode up with fellow Scum Bob Crain this year. We left the hotel around 1030 on Sunday, and only a few miles south ran into the start of the snow. As we drove farther south it got sloppier, turning into sleet and freezing rain. We took the Eastern Shore route instead of I-95 as there weren’t as many nut job drivers, and a good thing. Lots of accidents and spinouts on I-95 were heard on the scanner. The Eastern Shore route was slushy and slow, but manageable. Got to the airport in enough time, and right through security, surprisingly. Got on the plane at the scheduled time. . . and waited 2 hours while BWI crews cleared the runways and taxiways of slush to avoid it being sucked into engines. Then they were only allowing two flights at a time to taxi and de-ice due to the slush, so by the time we taxied out and got de-iced it was about 2.5 hours late. Got back to Columbus to find nearly 4 inches of snow on the ground at the airport; I had parked in the garage to avoid this, and glad of it. Roads were wet but clean so I made it home in good order, some 15+ hours after rolling out of the sack in the morning. After this trip the idea of the "SWL Springfest” sounds better and better. Even so, I had a great time as usual, and have had my faith in shortwave radio partially renewed (full renewal would only be possible with a real increase in SW broadcasting. . . I miss the glory days of sitting in the basement workshop listening to everywhere on earth).
