I understand that this extension was supposed to be standard in PHP
5.3, and I can empathize with the frustration of discovering that it
is in fact missing from many PHP builds. However... it's missing from
MAMP, and Apple's out-of-box PHP. Ouch... that creates a steep
learning curve for people who have traditionally been able to
kick-start Symfony easily.

(MacPorts PHP offers it as a port at least; that last isn't a real
complaint because virtually everything is a separate port in macports
PHP. But installing MacPorts PHP and MySQL is considerably more
difficult than installing MAMP or just adding MySQL to Snow Leopard's
pretty-good PHP)

I am concerned that this is probably significantly reducing the number
of people who are really evaluating Symfony 2 any further than the
"HelloBundle" level.

Bernhard mentioned trying to decouple intl from the forms framework.
Is anyone actively working on this yet? If I'm looking for a place to
contribute, is this a reasonable task to take on?

Thanks!
