I don't want to get into a religious argument about MTAs, but as the
sole development engineer for sendmail at Sun for the past 12+ years,
I take exception to the technical charge that sendmail fails to retry.
The default [Open]Solaris sendmail configuration has a value of 5 days
for the timeout.queuereturn value. Until then, sendmail will try to
send queued messages every queue interval, which is 15 minutes by default.
I have been running sendmail on the mail servers for my personal domains
and on several important servers at Sun for those entire 12+ years and
the only time I ever recall losing mail was when the underlying disk
hardware failed, back in the days before ZFS.

If you want to provide details in an effort to find the problem(s) in
a sendmail configuration, please send them to me privately, then one of
us can post a follow-up to the list once we have resolved everything.
