I have been with T-Mobile (formerly VoiceStream formerly OmniPoint) for more
than five years now and have been grandfathered under the old international
(non-WorldClass) calling option. Much cheaper for me when going to Germany,
incoming calls are just 30 cents or so, outgoing about a dollar, maybe a bit
more, but overall better for me than the WorldClass option where both, incoming
and outgoing is a dollar. However, if you travel frequently to multiple
countries, WorldClass is easier to understand and predict.

I used to have a prepaid SIM card for Germany (D2), which I bought a few years
ago while I was there (was about 30 dollars at the time, but required a German
address and ID to get it). It's good if you mainly make outgoing phone calls,
but if you rely on incoming ones and don't want to go through the hassle (and
cost) of setting up call forwarding on your cell to that new number or having
to inform people of the new (temporary) number, it's a pain in the neck. I'm
just dealing with the additional cost when I'm in Germany and am ok with it
(like I said, just 30 cents for incoming calls, and I keep them very short).
Oh, and to answer your question about service: You can savely assume that all
across Europe you get excellent reception and call clarity -- much better than
here. Most of Europe is virtually 100% covered with regard to GSM service.
Canada is very spotty (worse than the U.S.). Don't know about Mexico and Asia.

It's always fun having friendd of mine dial my NYC cell phone number, only for
me to tell them that I'm in Germany. Can't get that on Spring or Verizon... ;-)
