Make sure when you ask them to enable your world class international
roaming that they confirm with 2nd level support that it's been added
properly.

Once a year my voice and data plans 'roll' over or gets re-added and
this twice has caused me grief in not being able to roam. The phone
just keeps looking for network, when I know quite well that there is
signal in the country I'm in and that I have a quad-band phone, etc.
Both times (once in Mexico about 2 years ago, once in the Philippines
this month) I had to call t-mobile customer service and had the call
escalated to 2nd level support. The guy just sighed and said, "they
keep provisioning these accounts improperly". Immediately after this,
turning the handset on/off and BOOM, instant recognition by the GSM
provider.

That being said, I'm a fan of picking up prepaid GSM SIMs. My best
experience was recently in Manila, where as soon as you get out
customs, right beside the soft drink and snack vending machines is a
pre-paid GSM SIM vending machine. Insert your cash, and you get your
SIM to drop in your unlocked phone. It evens roams internationally
back in the US!
