You don't need to own anything. "Home Owners Insurance" of course, is for home OWNERS, but "Renters insurance" is for exactly what it implies - people who RENT their house/apartment/whatever. Renters insurance is relatively cheap at around $60 per year give or take, but in addition to getting a rider for a cell phone, these policies should also cover you if your car is broken into and personal belongings are stolen out of it - this is in addition to anything that happens to stuff in your actual apartment/house/etc.
