This after talking to a sales rep at a T-Mobile kiosk in Seattle today:

Are you happy with T-Mobile overall--coverage, signal strength,
customer service, all that good stuff?

I definitely want a pay-as-you-go plan (I normally use no more than
20 cellular minutes/month). The sales rep told me that if I sign up
with T-Mobile, I'd have to buy the first phone from them, the phone
would be locked, and I'd also have to buy the replacement phone from
them if the first one were lost or damaged.

I gather that phones can be unlocked, but would T-Mobile say, "Sorry,
you didn't buy the phone from us, you're out of luck."? Any BTDT's?
Thanks!
