This is where he's wrong.  You do not have to buy *any* phone from
T-Mobile.  As long as you get a phone that will work on at least GSM
1900 you can get it from anywhere and that could be craigslist, eBay or
T-Mobile.  If it's not from T-Mobile you have to make sure that it's
unlocked or you cannot use a T-Mobile SIM card.

I'm not sure I understand what the "out of luck" is he's referring to. 
And as far as replacing a phone it doesn't matter whether you're a
prepaid or a monthly billed person if you lose your phone you won't get
any break on the price of a replacement.
