I've had a variety of Pearl issues and have had multiple replacements even
in the last month (each with a different firmware version). My current
handheld did come with the latest version, so I didn't have to install it
directly. I spent nearly four (yes, four!) hours with a RIM technician
yesterday, as I'm still having the same problem with vanishing messages and
calls logs that 4.2.1 was supposed to correct. Although I love this device
more than previous Palm and WM ones, it's still not without some significant
problems. In addition to the horrific disappearing messages and calls bug,
I've also found that frequently the device simply stops receiving messages
altogether until I pull the battery and restart. It just acts like there
aren't any new messages, even though there are. Last week, this was
happening once a day. (It almost never happened with the old version).

This didn't really answer your question, though. I'm still not convinced
that the silence issue has been resolved either. I've gotten in the habit
of pausing before speaking, but I still get the impression the callers
aren't hearing me if I speak too quickly. What amazes me is that this
device has been out a year and RIM is still trying to resolve all of the
issues. It seems that this must cost TMO/RIM a small fortune when you look
at the amount of time they have to spend troubleshooting and ultimately
sending replacement devices that don't really solve the problem.
