I've had a G1 for the past few weeks and it is great. The integration between applications is outstanding. The battery life is less than stellar but on par with most 3G devices. 3G will suck the life out of any battery in 3-4 hours with constant use. I wish people would stop saying this device or that device is a killer for this and that, there's no such thing. If you use, like Google for email, IM, calendar then the G1 is for you. If you don't then you'll probably be better off with something else. You can use any email account you want but the biggest benefit comes from using Google's offerings. I'm using Google Apps setup on one of my domains which works just as well when I used my gmail login.
