If you're on a BIS plan now you're fine. Email is and has always been data, messages is text in any form (SMS, IM etc) and MMS (picture messages). PIN messages are data in case you're wondering.
As long as you keep your current plan you're good. If you want or could benefit from the data plan/messaging bundles then go for it but T-Mobile has traditionally kept grandfathered options as long as people kept their plan.
