I've never tried it, but my impression was that silk was usually reeled 
off a bunch of cocoons at once, so that the resulting thread was thicker 
than just one cocoon. I've never read anything about it being plied after 
that, although I've certainly seen plied silk. To get the twist to settle 
properly you might need to ply it twice, in small bundles in one 
direction, and in the final thread in the other direction. The end 
product should be sturdy enough to tw with. 

Of course, I'm just speculating wildly here...
