I don't think you have to go wide for lettering. Most of my lettered
patterns have 25 pattern tablets; I find with this, I can get a wide variety
of different letter styles, and it's clear and legible. My bands for the
TWIST double-face exchange were in a 25-tablet alphabet. Of course, I
usually end up working with about 35 tablets, because I border on both sides.

www.weavershand.com/gallery10.html
shows a black and white ribbon with double-faced text - this is the "spidery"
hand that I use to really pack the text in - I developed the heavier Gothic
style later. The letters that say "Liber Stargate" are fifty tablets, and I
was able to work in the hairlines and curlicues. You can see the heavier
Gothic in a couple of Judy Chapman's projects at

The whole piece that I made for the TWIST exchange is at

It's also on Janis's site, but something happened in the translation, and it
looks like it's seen through frosted glass.

I've also had fair success with other styles of alphabet using 25 tablets; I
worked up a really tiny one for 10 for one of my beginning classes, but it
the legibility isn't as good as with 25.

I missed the post before Linda's reply to Jenny, and can't find it - so if
I'm talking on the wrong stuff, let me know. <G> I've sent Linda the Gothic
letters for the upcoming book, and still am meaning (in my copious spare
time) to get some of the other patterns computerized for her - currently,
they're messy pencil graphs.
