The ideal for Textura Quadrata in its written form was for the space between the letters to be the same as the thickness of the letter staves; this made the page look "woven" of black and white bars. This gets a little complicated with some of the letters, because of the way they're shaped. What I usually do is arrange the letters in the order for the inscription using PatternMaker, and that allows me to scooch them (that being the technical term) closer or further apart as need be, before putting it to thread.
