In my world,
A is the top hole closer to you
D is the top hole farther from you

so looked at from the right

A D
B C

Going around the other way would give you an upside-down band too.

This was something I discovered when I was working on TurnStyler - patterns always tell you which colors to thread in which holes, and which holes should start on top, but they don't often tell you which way *they assume* the cards are facing. I wasn't sure how to describe that in the program, so I decided to describe it as having the cards facing right or left.
If the cards face right, with A-D on top, then A is the hole away from you.
If the cards face left, with A-D on top, then A is the hole closest to you.

My preference is for the cards to face to the right. but as I worked on the program, and tried patterns from different sources, I discovered some of them didn't look right, and finally figured out this was the reason.
