Sponsored by TWIST - Tablet Weavers International Studies & Techniques Hi,
I'm dubious about the claim that it is a 9th century Saxon band. It seems incredibly well preserved for such an old piece; after so long a time I would have expected the fibres to degrade significantly. I have not seen any old finds that have been preserved without any visible signs of disintegration. Also, the pattern and style does not strike me as Saxon in any way; the Saxon metalwork, weaving, and illuminations that I have seen are very different. If someone had shown me the band I would have thought it to be a modern reproduction of a renaissance pattern, or possible a very late period (1600's?) piece of weaving. If someone can confirm absolutely that it really is a 9th century Saxon band I will be astounded. Cheers, Eckhard.
