And to contribute a little to this discussion, I'm busily working on a band to
submit to the SOAR exhibit (which is just a week and a half away, yikes) which
is made from handspun silk.
I took a workshop at SOAR last year with Sara Lamb, and she taught us to spin
very fine very highly spun silk. Per her advice, if you need it thicker, just
ply more together. The thinking is that the tighter the spin, and the finer
the single, the more sheen you will get and the closer to reeled silk it will
look. It is also very strong spun that tightly which works well for tablet
weaving. I did have a short section that was a little underspun that did
abrade from the cards and break, but it was only one thread, and there haven't
been any problems other than that.
