I just wonder about how useful it is, given (presumably) the URL can be
derived from the ref key. Is the idea that people would directly click on
the link from the slippy map? Or is some other system going to read the URL?

I'm not saying don't do it, but if they changed the format of the link,
then all stops would need updating.
