Well.. it's chicken and egg. There wasn't anyone interested in the UK when I ran the first mapping parties there either.

If you set up a group on meetup.com you'd be surprised how many people join and start to get interested once you have a group meeting monthly.

We should really be aiming for one meetup per state. I think we have MA, WA, CA, CO now all have monthly meetups. How does NY, TX and the captiol look?

From my perspective there are a couple hurdles:

0) There aren't very many people aware of or interested in OSM in the US yet. 1) People interested in OSM who might be able to evangelize OSM already spend their time mapping or (in my case) just don't have any extra time outside of existing obligations, work, family life, etc.

That being said, perhaps there's something that could be done to grease the wheels and make it as easy as possible to get a mappy hour/mapping party going. Can those that have run successful ones recently talk about what they did, who they contacted, what time they held it? I'm thinking something like Harry Wood's diary posts for the London OSM meetups, but for the meetups in the US.

Maybe seeing/reading how others do it in the US (not that it needs to be different) would provide inspiration for the rest of us?

Agreed. Our mapping parties and meetups in Seattle have been awesome.

I see that a mapping party is planned for Boston this month.
         This is
awesome, and if you are nearby, you should attend.

There is also a mapping party on that date in Sherbrooke, Quebec.

But why aren't there ten times as many mapping parties in the
        US as
there are in Canada? The US has ten times the population. Y'all
should have more mapping parties. And Mappy Hours, to meet up
        with
other mappers and talk about mapping over your beverage of choice.

It's fun. Really. You should set one up. Today.
