Hey Rick, My Bad this time, I guess. I found the shortcut files in a
folder I had copied some extracted files too from the desktop. I don't
know how the hell I managed to select those files along with the one's I
actually wanted, but in this case, I apparently did. However all that
you say about cleanup etc. is true. It just doesn't keep people like
yours truly from making dumb mistakes. But for the life of me, I can't
figure out how I managed to do that.
One issue I had with XP that I never had when using 98 was some times
when selecting one or more files to either be cut, copied, or even
deleted, I would end up selecting the entire folder, and creating a real
mess. Thank God for the Recycle bin in the case of the accidental deletions.
I tell ya what's really a lot of fun is when you go to rename one file,
and end up renaming an entire folder with the same name, but with a less
than helpful number at the end of all but one. If you are really lucky,
you discover your mistake in time and go for the undo, but if not,
You're really screwed.
I always wondered if I was entirely responsible for that somewhat
frequent mistake, or if there was something quirky within the OS that
made it so easy to do. Keep in mind that it never happened before XP,
but hasn't yet happened to me with 8.1, but you can bet I'll definitely
be on the look out.
Thanks very much for your help,
Larry

Hi: That happened to me a couple of times and like you I was lucky and found
them in the Recycle bin.
I don't know, it happened while I was having problems with WindowEyes so I
have no idea if it is a WindowEyes related thing or not.
It wasn't the OS cleaning up unused icons since one of them was what I use
for the MyComputer icon on the desktop and I use that often.
Disk Cleanup is something you have to request to be run and I don't think it
does anything with icons on the Desktop. I think there is a utility that
cleans up unused icons but in the past I had to run that manually as well -
havent used it in a few years so not sure how that works today.
But it was indeed concerning that my MyComputer icon was suddenly gone!
I think it happened twice while I was doing some debugging concerning
WindowEyes and the use of the mouse to track dynamic content.
Now it hasn't happened since then but it happened twice when I was mucking
about with the WindowEyes settings, trying out various web pages and one of
my own desktop applications so something was going on then that caused the
problem.
It never happened before that timeframe nor after.

Subject: Where have all the shortcuts gone?
This thing started, I believe, yesterday. All of a sudden, my shortcuts
just keep disappearing from my desktop. I can some times go to the
recycle bin and find them there, but not always. I know that in XP there
was a Windows function/service or something called disk cleanup or
something that would go round picking things off, and I didn't like it
then either.
Is there anything I can do to keep this from happening? I would really
rather do it myself, thank you very much.
Larry
