You might find that even after unchecking the update box, Firefox will still try to perform the update. If that happens, you can stop this behavior by renaming the firefox.exe to firefoxold.exe and then launch that renamed executable. Tools, options, advanced check never update. It will say not recommended but will allow you to check it.
